Propane is a Green Energy Alternative
Environmental benefits and innovations involving propane gas.
When it comes to the comfort of the families and businesses we serve throughout Newfoundland, Harvey’s is committed to balancing environmental responsibility, affordability and reliability.
We’re pleased to say that propane delivers on all three. This overwhelmingly domestic energy source can power a range of essential products, from heating systems and water heaters to stoves, grills, generators and even vehicles. It does this with minimal emissions. And you’ll be amazed to learn that this fuel is becoming greener every year!

How Eco-Friendly Is Propane?
Propane is one of the cleanest, most environmentally responsible energy sources available to Canadian homeowners and businesses. Recognized under Canada’s Alternative Fuels Act for its lower emissions and reduced environmental impact, propane offers a smart way to heat your home and power your appliances while supporting a greener future.
Propane produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions than many conventional energy sources, with lower carbon monoxide output, virtually no sulphur or particulate matter emissions (which have been linked to respiratory ailments and acid rain). Propane also contains zero methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Plus, because propane is non-toxic and dissipates safely into the air, it won’t contaminate soil or groundwater — making it a clean choice inside and outside your home.
How Efficient Are Today’s Propane Systems?
The emissions released by propane equipment are also limited by its exceptional efficiency. Today’s propane gas heating systems have efficiency ratings as high as 97 and 98 per cent. Modern propane water heaters offer some of the best recovery rates around, and tankless water heaters are even more efficient.
What does this mean for Newfoundland residents? Better comfort, lower fuel spending, and less energy being wasted. That’s great news for your family, your wallet and the planet!
Have You Heard of Renewable Propane?
One of the most exciting emerging energy sources is renewable propane. This fuel is chemically identical to conventional propane, so it can be used in existing gas equipment without modification.
How is it different? Renewable propane is made from organic and recycled feedstocks like used cooking grease, animal fats, woody biomass and sundry waste products. The process for producing renewable propane is low-carbon, and it diverts items that would otherwise decompose at a landfill. The resulting fuel has a fraction of the carbon impact of conventional propane, which is already quite low. In fact, renewable propane is carbon neutral at the point of combustion.
While renewable propane is not in wide use yet, we’re seeing it become more widespread throughout Canada.
